So I'm wondering... What are the downsides to trying to commit suicide with sodium nitrate? Is it like a pill suicide in that the attempt can result in you getting brain damage instead of dying?

I haven't heard anything of the sort. I've heard that if you take SN you either survive or you don't, no reports of brain damage, at least I haven't heard any..

it would take 20 minutes or less to reach unconsciousness and during that period of time anything can happen. SI could kick in, or the side effect could be overwhelming.
from what i can remember from stan's guide, it would take about 1-4 hrs to reach death.
there's no brain damage if you survived an SN attempt. that's one of the reason why SN is such a popular method.

There are many SN threads that discuss the pro's and con's, I haven't come across any negative reports from survivors.

Some of my "general notes" on this :

RELIABILITY
If you follow the protocol (Stan's guide) closely, and have a certain amount of determination to undergo some discomfort without calling an ambulance, and provided you take precautions to not be found, then the likelihood of the method failing is very low.
Some members have vomited, but still been successful. In the cases where people vomited it doesn't appear they drank any more SN, yet they still appeared to succeed, although the recommendation is to have a couple of extra glasses ready, and to drink more in the event of vomiting. If you vomit very soon after drinking, then drinking more would be considered required. For cases where the method has failed (almost always due to not following the protocol, calling an ambulance, or being found), the recovery seems to be good, and there don't seem to be many reports of serious lasting damage.

PEACEFULNESS
I've read various accounts of people taking SN, from various sources.
The overall impression I get is that it is "reasonably peaceful".
I believe there will be some discomfort.
I have heard it described as being like a "bad hangover".
I believe people usually go unconscious after about 20 minutes.
People who have taken SN but called an ambulance or been found have reported varying degrees of discomfort. Some have stated it was peaceful. I don't recall many cases of people reporting severe discomfort.
