Before I get into this, I want to get into a big thing I need to note. I'm no where near an expert in this field. I'm only giving my 2 cents, but you need to do your own research into this.
As far as I can tell, there is nothing saying flat out to not off yourself. So, lets take a look at the
10 commandments.
- "I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any strange gods before Me."
- "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain."
- "Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day."
- "Honor thy father and mother."
- "Thou shalt not murder."
- "Thou shalt not commit adultery."
- "Thou shalt not steal."
- "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
- "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife."
- "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods."
Obviously suicide won't apply to 1-2 & 6-10.
3 only applies from sundown on Friday evening to Sunday to be on the safe side.
4 might depend on your view point. Like is offing yourself dishonoring them?
As far as 5, this is the biggest iffy. Some say murder and others say kill. I could be wrong, but I think the oldest text we know of is murder. If it's kill, then you're screwed no matter what. Like you can kill an insect, germ, etc. But you can't murder it without very exact things. And similar to humans. Many think if you kill someone without intention, then it isn't murder.
But even the Bible itself is kinda iffy on this since it OK war to a point. In some points to me it looks like it says war is OK. Like if you fight in God's name or for God.
And if we were to look at
random polls on this topic, killing in war. It's almost a 50/50 what everyone thinks.
Because of this, something I do on topics like this when there is no authority I can go to in order to simply clear this up. I go off of what I personally believe. Do you think killing=murder? If so, what about germs? Note it doesn't say that shalt not kill/murder x, y, and z. It just says thou shalt not kill/murder. Meaning at all. meaning everyone is screwed on this one.
OK, maybe you agree with me that killing isn't always murder. Now the question is, is offing yourself murder? If the answer is yes, what about not taking care of yourself? Like eating cake for your birthday, or not taking out a loan for some medical treatment to save your life?
In short, what is the hard line to you?
Beyond this, something to note is.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." NIV
Eph 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast." NIV
Rom 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." NIV
But the most important is.
Romans 3:31, NIV: "Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law."
I found a pretty good site that gets a little more into this
https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/can-a-christian-commit-suicide/
But in a nutshell it is pointing out more than less what I am. If you want your answer, then you need to read the bible. Does the bible flat out say killing yourself = to you not going to heaven? As far as I can see, it doesn't flat out say this. So at this point we need to look at the rules and what it says about salvation. As far as I can tell the salvation part just says you need to live by the commandments and believe in Jesus died for our sins.
Lastly, you need to do your own research as I mentioned from the start. one good place I found is
https://www.bibleref.com/
Within the search, put in the search in the verse you want to look more into (ex:James 2:26).
Side note: I think this is something many worry about. I think this has kept many from actually doing it too.
