Planning to off myself via charcoal method in the car. Just have some questions.

1. I've been trying to purchase charcoal briquettes online, but seems like the ones they sell in my country are eco-friendly — odorless, smokeless, and one says it's safe to use indoors. Would these brands still be effective? If not, are there any brands in particular? Will regular, natural charcoal work the same?

2. I plan to do it in my car. I'd burn the coal in a wok-type pan outside until the coals turn white, then I'd place it on a fireproof tarp in the backseat and just wait for carbon monoxide to do its work. Would this method work?

Unfortunately the only way to be 100% sure it is going to work is to use a carbon monoxide detector. But the ones that have like 5000 or more PPM limit are quite expensive. If you cannot afford the expensive ones, even using one that can measure 1000ppm is enough to give you an idea that there are CO building up in your room/car.
  • About your first question, I think it is most likely just a stupid advertisement. Any fuel that has carbon in it emits carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide when it burns (CO2/CO depends on the burning type and the amount of oxygen left in the closed area). I don't know which coal type is better, but I have an idea which one is worse. Stay away from hookah coals, they usually burn and smoulder for a shorter amount of time compared to barbeque coals.
  • About your second question, yeah there seems to be nothing wrong with your description of the method. HOWEVER, I don't know the size of your pan, and one pan might not be enough. Most people on the carbon monoxide mega thread suggests to burn at least 2-3 kilograms of charcoal. Again, the answer comes down to seeing how much CO is present in your environment, thus a need for carbon monoxide detector. Better safe than sorry.
  • Also, don't forget to seal the windows and other possible air-circulating spaces with tapes.
