Check out the pinned Suicide Resource Compilation above. The CO megathread has a lot of good info, like time to unconsciousness/death at various concentrations. It's best to invest in a CO meter and do dry runs.

You don't light the coals in your tent/car/etc. You light it outside and let it burn until the smoke stops and it's just gray/glowing coals. Charcoal starters, the little handled cylindrical things, seem good. I think they're used to get all the coals started evenly and avoid one buried in the pile starting to smoke later than the others.

So, I did this 20 years ago but I put the BBQ in my office at home, sealed the vents. If I hadn't been found by my late partner it would have worked. They resuscitated me unfortunately, put me through 2 rounds of the hyperbaric chamber, I was in a coma for nearly a week, and all of the neurologists were telling my partner I'd be a vegetable if I survived it.
I can tell you the problem with doing that in your car--the heat from the BBQ will melt pretty much everything. I'm telling you that from experience, and that is why I switched from car to house. My dang dash board melted so there's that. You'd need a *very* large cargo area for a vehicle BBQ situation to work.

That was my concern as well, the heat. Maybe aluminum foil on the roof of the car? (Like a heat shield). And I wouldn't do it in the dead of summer, better in the dead of winter.

What do you think of a single little grill in a tile shower?

I think that would work. Just for the love of jeebus make sure no one will interrupt you. The doctors couldn't believe I wasn't severely brain damaged because most people with the level of CO in their system that I had generally are complete vegetables. Somehow I managed to escape that. As long as you live alone or won't have company for *many* hours you should CTB. Also, if you do live with other people or there are animals in the house, seal any vents and cracks in the door. Additionally if there are CO detectors in the house, disengage them. You don't want to alert the neighbors there's a "problem"
