Where is the SI instinct with all these accidental CO deaths? I don't get how they don't notice the symptoms. The CO levels can't be that high if they weren't even trying to cbt, so I doubt they were instantly knocked out
I have thought about this a lot... The best I can understand is that survival instinct is more triggered by knowing you're dying or are in danger, rather than exposure to a gas or chemical agent that causes death to a victim of accidental exposure.
No matter what method a person chooses, no matter how "peacefull" or fast. You will have to overcome your survival instinct at least for a few seconds no matter what.
With the accidental exposures, the SI does not trigger because the person just perceives that they are getting the flu, ate something bad, or are having a bad headache.
Sleeping pills won't change that either, because you still have to take them knowing why you are taking then.
Once a person decides to take their own life the survival instinct becomes active and becomes more and more dominant and controlling the longer the persons method takes to prep, and / or be rendered unconscious.
It's a battle with youself. I think this is why a lot of people choose not to go through with it when it comes from methods that require days of prep, or hours of willfull exposure.
I think of it like this:
A friend you know and trust is pointing a fake but real looking gun at you. You know its your friend, you know the gun is fake. You may even laugh or say something silly to them.
Now
Someone you dont know, but wants to hurt you is pointing a real loaded gun at you... that is when SI would kick in.
Even if in reality your friends gun was real and he shot you, and the strangers gun was fake and really just wanted your wallet. Your SI is 100% based on your perception of if you are , or are not in danger.
