Although women are more likely to attempt suicide than men, men are more likely to succeed at it. There are many, MANY reasons I want to ctb. But part of it is to prove that yes, women can be successful in ctb. That's not the whole reason. But that motivates me to succeed a little bit. Can any other woman relate?

To some extent, yes.

I sort of can't help but wonder how many suicides were actually intended to just be suicidal gestures but resulted in suicide.

I agree with that. And then some people desperately want to die, but fail for whatever reason.

Women are just more likely to use less violent methods something about wanting to leave a nice corpse and just less inclined to violence in general it just happens the most violent methods are the most deadly. Men are more likely to own firearms and have experience with them too which makes a difference I suspect as well.

Since I'm a man, I'm not sure whether I ought to weigh in, but: Could part of it be that men are less inclined to think of the effects their suicide will have on others (more self absorbed), and can kill themselves without the distraction of worrying about the fallout, while women tend to think through how much damage their death might do to others (more empathetic), and thus be more inclined to be thinking of others' reactions to their death and "flinch" at the critical moment? I know that's speaking in very broad generalities, but after all, that's what statistics are.

I'll go sit down and shut up, now. (Notice how the men have had the longest posts in the thread.)

Men are raised to just DO things, take care of business, do what needs to be done, i was just thinking the other day how i wish i was raised like that instead of being a "needy whiney bitch" (i was in a bad mood at the time, i know thats not true about women) i actually used to get mistaken for a guy in suicide chats/forums when talking about how much i wanted to blow my face off because shotgun was my ideal method and i finally got one but waited too long til it was taken. I cant get another gun now , but i still think about dying violently , that might have something to do with never having felt quite like a girl, i was never pretty, boys were always horrible to me and mostly still are (if youre not fuckable, youre not worth respect...well even then..) i feel like if i played my cards right i could aggravate a man into beating me to death just for looking him in the eye!

@existenceissuffering, please accept my apologies for not answering the question posed here but questioning the 'data' concerning success rates in this matter as it applies to gender.

Regarding the question - "Can other women relate" - While I never considered wanting to succeed at CTB specifically due to gender - I can relate as it concerns other areas of endeavor. (This is obvious from my Knee-jerk reaction to the data, right?)

It would be impossible to articulate my reasons here, but in answer to the question. Yes, I can relate. Thank you for the thought-provoking question.

No worries, it's always good to not accept what people say blindly.

Thank you. I've always tended to be suspicious of the phrase: 'they say'. Without giving away my country of residence, I find myself asking 'Says who?' a lot lately.

Female suicide attempts are notoriously less successful and I think it's probably due to a number of things, some of which have already been posted: wanting to leave a pretty corpse, underestimating/misjudging what is needed to kill a person, and purposely failing for attention. I've read of many cases where it seemed to boil down to things like depression not being taken seriously, and the woman just wanting to talk and be properly listened to. I think as such these are all understandable - I don't find them lame reasons or anything.

However, I do hope nobody kills themselves just to "better the numbers" as has been posted above (presumably that's tongue in cheek, as I actually can't think of a worse motivation to off yourself).

To some extent. It does irritate me when people try to make suicide a teen's or men's issue and ignore suicide in adult women.
