HI, this is long shot, but maybe someone knows something about this and can help me.

I received a bitcoin address to send to (personal business), but my bitcoin wallet doesnt recognize it when I paste it into the "recipient" box. The adress that was sent to me also has dashes.. so it looks something like 84fd655fda-fdaf5-fda5.. ETC. It also starts with a number 8. According to this wiki article about bitcoin addresses they only begin with a number 1, 3 ,or bc1.. I've also never seen dashes in a bitcoin address...
Does anyone know which virtual currency uses dashes in their address or maybe its some kind of key to be used in a bitcoin wallet that i just don't understand?

How many characters are in the address? That does not look like a bitcoin address since it's hexadecimal and bitcoin uses alphanumeric. More likely Ethereum or an ETH-based altcoin, with dashes added for better readability.

It's worth clarifying this with the person who gave it to you, so you don't accidentally lose the money by sending it to a non-existent address. Is it for a darknet market?

32 characters

"lose money" - Oh absolutely, I wasn't going to send it (well I couldn't anyway b/c it won't let me) Thanks for looking out though :)
"Ethereum" - That's what I was thinking, that it might be for a different cryptocurrency. Also I'd prefer not to say what its for.

Is there a place where you can type in a address and see what currency it's for? I suppose if i had every currencies app/account I could jsut try to see if any of them accept it.

Some crypto currencies share the same address format though, and it would be possible for the wallet to allow sending it and you could lose the money if you chose the wrong currency. That's why I wouldn't go trying different currencies until you find one that works.

I don't know of any currencies that use a 32 character hex string for the address. Could this person have sent you the wrong string thinking it was an address? Or are they an experienced user?

the US is trying to stop crypto currency. My credit cards will no longer allow me to purchase as I have in the past. Debit card same. Bank and Credit Union will no longer allow me to transfer into or use to buy. The only current way I know to trade is with existing currency and to and from paypal. To send there are some places like moneygram you can go to and pay cash to send to someones wallet.
