Found these interesting articles on whole-food plant-based diets for treating depression. Some people are depressed, and some have life issues. But diet and exercise, living healthy, getting sunshine, socializing, and laughing are what makes somebody want to live and be happy. For some, it might help get on the right track, worth reading.

I too find that limiting and sometimes total elimination of carbs and sugars (that fuck with my blood sugar) is not fun the first few days but helps a lot in the long run. Thanks for posting this.

Cut out sugar, cut out fast food, drink water only, eat meat produced by healthy animals, eat vegetables and fruits grown without the use of pesticides

The western world is a gluttonous mess. It's disgusting how little people can control themselves.

It's really a vicious cycleā€”you're depressed, so you stay in, become sedentary, eat Ben & Jerry'sā€”which makes your depression worse. It's the hardest thing to break that, especially when the brain is flat-out lying to us.

People mentioned cutting out sugar, I think that is a big one as I have noticed if I do eat sugar or candy I will feel either more down, depressed and tired the following day.
So just something to look out for.

Mediterranean or keto seems the best to help alleviate depression.
IIRC, there's a theory that depression and other mental illnesses are exacerbated or maybe even caused by by the body's inflammatory response. The Mediterranean diet (or any diet incorporating lots of whole foods, healthy fats, and eliminating processed foods, really; I think the Mediterranean diet has just been studied the most) has anti-inflammatory properties, thereby alleviating symptoms of mental illness.

Actually eating better is another issue entirely....

I started a Mediterranean style diet in early 2018. One of the unexpected benefits was how greatly my depression was reduced. I've dealt with depression since I was around 12 (now middle-aged), but the dark days are far fewer and less severe. I also feel better in general, with considerably more energy, and am less than half the size I was when I started the diet.

I mean, I still sought out this forum, so life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, but it's considerably brighter. Also just having the energy to go out and walk/bike through wooded trails helps me maintain perspective and outlook.

Prior to Mediterranean I tried Keto for four months and was miserable. Lethargy, pains (especially chest), and depression was difficult to control (I was close enough to a rash final decision that I made a gun harder to access). It apparently works for many, but for me it was awful.

Anyway, now I wonder how much of my childhood-early adult depression, poor decisions, and anti-social behavior may have been due to growing up with such a poor diet typical of the rural southeastern US. That is, nearly everything fried, sweetened, and fatty. I would have still been a nerdy, creative, shy, open-minded person in a very closed-minded community, but maybe with less self-loathing and TV absorption.

But back to the point. Yes, try a Mediterranean diet if you can and see if it helps, at least getting away from highly-processed foods and having more whole vegetables and fruit.
