I am going to do a separate post for this as the talk about shutting this site down and BBC spies inflitrating this site is disgusting. The mental ill health provision in the UK is disgusting anyway. You even mention suicide to a member of a mental health team, or crises line, you are threatened with a crises team visiting you and hospitalisation. It is more like a threat than offer of help. There is no safe space to discuss suicide, apart from support lines like the Samaritans.

To any "spies" monitoring this site, if Ofcom want to ban anything, they should ban specific subjects being mentioned, not the whole site as that would just push people who are already desperate and isolated into further isolation and deeper desperation. This place is a breathing space to discuss "forbidden" topics you can't discuss anywhere else, even with friends as they just go into panic. To ban this, and block things like assisted dying for people with severe mental ill health issues is just cruel when proper, compassionate provision is not made for such people by the Government anyway!

If this website shut down - what I think is pretty possible, considering how SS is portrayed on media - there'll be a considerable amount of people totally helpless, who will continue killing themselves with or without ir - so it doesn't solve the problem, only excludes a place of interaction for the desperate.

BBC, do you have the answer how people can get over the mental/physical health issues, trauma, lack of support system, and poverty that may drive them to ctb?

If not, then please do not interfere.

If you want to save the world, then start preaching how people should stop putting themselves over others for self-benefit (money, righting a wrong from childhood through malicious behavior (usually Cluster B personality disorders), sex, etc).

I think you radically misjudge how much people or the government cares. Maybe your parents if you have family that cares yeah maybe. But the government/police whatever unless you tell them to their face and even then they might not care. Caring would imply an altruistic nature that simply people don't have. Not a stern phone saying knock it off, not a straight jacket, not a wow you were a victim of crimes I better make it right. Nothing. No one gives a fuck. In all fairness this exact point actually been addressed by some "pro lifers with them acknowledging we treat people worse than animals. Ann Widdecombe for example.

I'm from the UK and attempted to ctb last summer. Can second what OP said, they just alert you to the GP who give out sertraline like candy, got a phone call to Samaritans (admittedly, the lady I spoke to was nice, but it was clear all she could do was just comfort me not fix anything) but other than that, no help. And I've gotten two jobs since, lost weight, socialise regularly - guess what! I still wanna CTB !!

I also signed up for local counselling through the NHS considering that would be way cheaper that me going for private therapy and what do you know, they never have slots. It's been weeks. I saw one slot and it was during my shift so I couldn't take it. They constantly remind me to book but then there's no free slots, I have to keep asking them to refresh my booking link and rinse and repeat.

So yeah, honestly fuck this country. Taxed to shit and I don't get anything back from it, and I'm doing supposedly "everything" to get better.

If i did I wouldn't be here. Im not worth a "spy" being sent. That's preposterous. People don't care. It's literally in the expression no one is coming to save you. Doesn't matter if you are victim of crimes in medical school, abandoned by everyone, apply to 1000+ jobs (i have a university degree as well) and can't get an opportunity in life. People don't give a fuck about anyone besides themselves.

Why is it that if someone decides that they do not wish to continue their life…..the assumption is " they must be mentally unwell??
Many of us have genuine rational reasons to no longer want to continue with this existence!
This forum presents the opportunity for people to openly discuss their feelings and the reality of ending your life. Yes this includes the many possible methods which hopefully can guide those of us who do wish to proceed to a peaceful end with the minimum of trauma to loved ones.

It's particularly painful for me to see the stick this community gets from journalists because I have worked as a journalist and did my master's on media studies with one of the largest government-funded media outlets in Europe. It's disappointing, feels like being betrayed by my own kind.

Why, just why? Where's the empathy, where's the critical thinking? When did our profession become just headlines and sensationalism for a quick buck? You're not writing for some shitty pulp publication, you're writing for the BBC. You carry on your shoulders the pride of a nation and the responsibility this career entails. Go beyond the surface, look around, ask questions that challenge the narrative. Learning about the hypodermic needle model and knowing the list of Galtung & Ruge's news values by the back of your hand doesn't make you a journalist. Sapere aude, for fuck's sake!

Being impartial, speaking for those who aren't heard, saying something that may go against the norm in the name of information so people can autonomously make up their minds. That's what you're supposed to do. And it's not what you're doing. No wonder I changed career paths to language services, journalists like the ones writing one-sided shallow sob stories about this site are a sad reminder of how low the bar has fallen for media professionals.

Suicide will happen, website or not. However, having a place to discuss such a topic could mean the difference between a peaceful passing or increased suffering from a failed attempt. Taking that place away significantly increases the chances of people making uninformed decisions about ending their lives and ultimately causing more harm than good.

Many of those who choose to end their own lives have suffered enough to come to such a conclusion, so finding them a way out that causes the least amount of suffering would be the most compassionate thing to do, yes?

Real harm reduction starts when people are allowed to make their own decisions. Of course, this hinges on the principle that choosing suicide is just as valid as choosing recovery, which, unfortunately, has not been well received or accepted, generally speaking. It's a shame so many people and governments insist on keeping us here against our wills...

It is different in the UK. Freedom of speech here/thought is severely restricted.

They are seriously talking of how they can ban this site in the UK. People have told me to try the Tor search engine or having a VPN might be enough to access this if they do ban it in the UK. Other countries are opening up assisted dying for severe, proven cases of mental ill health, in the UK they are not even allowing it when people are dying in agony, still they won't allow assisted dying.

The weirdest thing for me is that these journalists will presumably come on here and lie to people. People seeking connection from others who are struggling. I guess they must be morally ok in themselves doing that because presumably they agree that it's for the greater good. That they see nothing good about this forum. That they agree that the people here should have nowhere to go to express themselves openly.

I can agree with maybe having qualms about certain aspects. The accessability to minors troubles me but, that's a general internet problem and, it's very hard to solve while retaining anonymity provisions. I suppose my hope is that people were honest. That minors know they aren't allowed on the site till they turn 18. Plus, that parents have more clue about their child's state of mind and, what they might be accessing online.

Still, to throw the baby out with the bath water as it were. To enable an employer to attack a site through them. I'm relieved my job doesn't ask me to do things like that. I wonder if they ever end up attacking things they actually believe in. I wonder if it truly is all for the story and to get on in their careers. Or, whether they 100% believe in all the things the BBC does.

Off topic but, there are other jobs I don't understand too. Like, defence lawyers. What if they strongly believe their client is guilty of a serious crime and, they try to get them off the hook on a technicality? How can they live with themselves? How can they be so confident being so dishonest? Plus, profit from it?
