Oh so broke. I was dependent on credit cards for years while I waited for my social security case to be battled in court and now I'm $24k in the hole for credit cards and $60k in the hole for student loans. I get $9k a year from SSI. Not a chance. Finally signed up with a National Debt Relief program where basically you pay a flat fee into a "savings account" (for the lack of a better term) and they argue it out with your creditors to try to get the amt paid back lessened (they'd rather have some money than have me bankrupt and no monkey). It will destroy my so-so credit score, and I will be called by creditors every day but it was the only thing I could think of.
I'm trying to get my student loans forgiven on terms of total and permanent disability (
https://disabilitydischarge.com/ to those in the US) and I'm desperately hoping it gets approved. In the meantime I'm on an Income Contingent Plan where they decide how much you pay per month based on your income and since mine is so low it's always $0. But I'm still accruing interest.
ETA oh and I still owe my attorney about $1k (out of $2.5k) from my SSI case (I didn't get backpay) which I pay $50 a month toward.
ETA 2 my dad and step mom are rich as hell but have never offered to help. My mom helps a little but she's definitely lower middle class and can't afford much. All the grandparents on my dad's side (they're divorced and remarried) are super rich too. Mom's parents definitely aren't they live on their social security pension.
