Are there any anti-depressants that you could overdose on and kill yourself? I was talking to my doctor about anti-depressants today, and I said I didn't think taking too many of them would kill me, but she said they could.

Is overdosing on anti-depressants a better way of killing yourself than I thought?

Not in the same sense you're thinking. Will the OD kill you? No. It'll give you a headache in most cases, maybe mess with your kidneys and make you pee a lot. Can you lose your mind and kill yourself in a manic episode? Maybe. Same as OD'ing on acid

The way they give them out like candy, I doubt it. The right combo maybe, but swallowing an entire bottle of Wellbutrin won't do it. If they were a good way to ctb, they wouldn't hand them out by the barrel full to depressed people.

do I think they cause brain damage... yes. Do I think doctors understand the full severity of being so free to dispense them, no.

I thought they could but all my research points to them not.

Faust is right. But also other TCA. I am refused any TCA due to this and they know my suicidal wishes. Just educational info. Tried taking a lot of generic Paxil once. Didn't do anything but enlarged liver for a few days. Some may die but it is rare with SSRI.

They might give you side effects that make you want to CTB, but in terms of lethality they are "safe" for the most part

Zoloft almost killed me. after about 12 hours the er doctor told me another hour or two and I'd be gone
edit: that is it was 12 hours before I went to the er
it was probably 2 months worth of pills

Some of the older ones, tricyclics I believe they're called, can. It can take a very, very long time though.

They are now specifically made to be almost impossible to overdose and kill yourself with.

Older tricyclic antidepressants might, but they are rarely prescribed.

Some genius finally figured out it was a bad idea to give fatal pills to people with depression. Duh.
