Anyone else used to be Emo, Goth etc. in their teens? I am in a nostalgic mood right now and have been listening to some of these songs I used to listen to back when I was 15 years old. (I am 24 now will turn 25 in April)
The Birthday Massacre - Looking glass
The Birthday Massacre - Kill the lights
Green Day - Boulevard of broken dreams
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love
Secondhand Serenade - Your Call

Although I was EXTREMELY depressed back then I miss that time so much with all the amazing experiences of being a teenager and all of these intense feelings now I don´t feel anything I rarely cry, I never feel happy or sad I just feel emotionless I have become so cold I am just an empty shell of the person I used to be.

I am a male btw but I used to have a very feminine face so the style suited me perfectly.

I was a huge emo as a kid, later turned into a goth when I discovered Joy Division. I was really into the promise ring, Jimmy eat world and all time low.

Well, I dyed my hair jet black in 2001. I had it in my head that girls liked that. Had the whole spiky boyband hair thing going on, with a sutble nod to emo-ism on certain days if I felt like it. I was more 5ive than Green Day, though.

i've never been able to define myself like that. i noticed that world does that through music culture, groups, clothing, but my heart was never into some group or culture sincerely, everything was pretending trying to fit in while lying to myself. so i danced hiphop eventhough i didn't like it , a pathetic wannabe rapper outside, inside an empty, scared shell already as a teenager, punk period felt exactly the same. i'm as lost now as i was then, even worse now. : ]

Yes, I was a big emo! I had bleached hair :) ! Spent all my time on MySpace. Actually yesterday I was listening to taking back Sunday. I miss those days.

My ex was in a popular emo band. I don't want to name them here but their album was top 10. When I listen to their stuff now I cringe ! He wasn't particularly talented or cool... actually he was a bit of a loser... he just got lucky.

I still like Marilyn Manson though. He is a genius. I think I'll always be a bit emo inside!

I went from emo to goth from middle school to H.S. All my friends were too. I spent a lot of money on black eyeliner

I was an aspiring goth and aspiring emo and aspiring 'scene' kid, ive never actually been anything in my life, always just living in my head and having a certain 'look' costs money. I still love the birthday massacre! This anthem about dying alone is so cathartic

Were you living in South Carolina in 2001?

Sorry I didn´t see the comments because somehow I didn´t get the notifications only the likes showed up.

I also started out Emo then turned Goth I was pretty extreme with it all with nail polish, foundation, white powder, eye liner, eye shadow and I of course had long black hair and two snake bite piercings and at special events I would sometimes use contact lenses with color which looked cool. I also wore ALL black clothes, choker with spikes, necklaces, rivet blacelet, pin needles on my pants with badges and platform boots or military boots.

I miss those days it felt so good dressing up like that spending so much time getting ready and caring about my looks, I loved the attention I loved the lifestyle and all the wonderful people. Nowadays I feel so nostalgic and jealous when I see Emo or Goth teenagers and it makes me feel so old because I will turn 25 soon and I hope I can soon kill myself because all the happy and exciting years are far behind me and I will never experience anything close to that ever again.

Nope, lived in Europe back then (from England originally).
That explains my confusion. I had it in my head you're from England, but your profile says you're from South Carolina.

I asked about 2001 because my subjective impression of South Carolina is that it would be a difficult place to grow up as a young person with black spiky boy band hair.

Did the whole goth thing in my college days up till I was about 30. Been in and out of the scene, known most of the musicians, dressed the part, etc. Got tired of the passive-aggressive drama building up in the circles. You have so many subcultures of goth, and that if you didn't fall into any of the popular ones, you would get chastised for it. I still enjoy the music like Birthday Massacre, CombiChrist, Covenant, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, The Black Queen, Mr. Kitty, The Cruxshadows, etc.

I actually never noticed any bad things about the community and the sub cultures you talk about you make it sound like cliques but I never noticed any of that only different styles like Emo, Goth, Punk, Scene, Alternative, Cyber-Goth stuff like that.
-I called myself Goth after I went from Emo to Goth but in reality I was just an Emo kid dressed in all black.

God I really would love to show you guys a picture of me back then I was so cute! But I really don´t want to doxx myself :'(

I was goth-adjacent. Black hair, black clothes, Doc Martens (this was the late 80s, before they were co-opted by dads). The Cure, Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, augmented by the more poppy side of British music: New Order, Depeche Mode, OMD.

This. I was more of a weekend goth girl, in it for the Bauhaus, the eyeliner, and the angst. Oh, that deep, dark, gothic angst.
