I'm curious as to if there are people learning a language here. How are you learning? Classes or self study? Do you have friends or pen pals? Is there a reason you're learning: pleasure or business?

Curious minds want to know.

Me? Japanese, self study, one conversational tutor and maybe a pen pal soon, mostly pleasure but might try to utilize for business purposes maybe!

My Primary / first language is American Sign Language, ASL my second language is English. I teach ASL. I am Deaf/HH. Teach one on One but also encourage using the Deaf community. I had to learn when I became Deaf/HH and learned from a Native Deaf teacher and from the Deaf Community. I think any language should include using the language's social community to get the most out of learning what is not taught in schools. Peace.

Absolutely ! There's a decent ASL community here which is how I was able to learn as much as I do. But the japanese community here isn't nearly as large so it's been a struggle here !

I grew up speaking Welsh and English, was taught French and Latin in school, since leaving school I learnt Hebrew and Greek. Not really that clever with languages.

Could maybe try some online community but I know that is not always good. Need be careful. Maybe ask one of the local japanese if you could meet some of their friends too? But being careful. Wish you the very best in your journey's no matter what they are. Peace.

Learning Korean (한국어) and I'm 영어 해요 (English speaking).

All my peers are learning Japanese and in my online spaces there is a high demand for Korean and English speakers, so I took a shot and found it easier than Japanese. Unfortunately, I'm self taught, and my motivation is minimal since nobody wants to learn with me. I have no encouragement or support. I stopped learning a few months ago, I want to get back to it one day, when life is less chaotic.

I feel you ! I'm working on my motivation now! Reaching and grabbing for anything I can. It feels llike a lonely road indeed.

Japanese mostly by watching dramas these days, but it's surprisingly effective, though I have taken so classes in the past and would love to again if given the opportunity so my kanji can improve. I've always felt more Japanese than French so that's just my natural inclination and interest.

And I'm still working on improving my english since I'm not a native by doing everything I can in english unless the original source is japanese or french. And that's out of love for the language and for informational purposes, a lot of the stuff I consume has never been translated.

French - it's slow but I'm on Duolingo and have just under a year's streak going :D I'd love to pick up Esperanto or Spanish though. Life would be so much better in Spanish.

That is beyond awesome. 🥰 I'd love to hear about that progress at some point if it's possible.

Well you know what? Any communication is good communication when dementia is involved ... trust me on that (I had an aunt who kept forgetting language altogether)

Oooo! I'm doing self study for Japanese. There aren't resources or colleges to minor in here.

Is it laziness or did a life event happen. Or a loss of motivation? Or something?

Yes, learning Arabic. Can read and write, can translate some things, speaking is poor. I'm self taught and never really had a plan. Just picked it up a lot as I went a long and have worked my way through some books.
