I'm thinking about shooting myself. I looked up pics of gunshot suicide victims, and they are extremely gory. Luckily, that means it looks like one of the more reliable methods.
For anyone who shot themselves and survived or was shot by someone else, what was it like?

What caliber will you be using? Because handgun suicide pics is in general not that going unless it´s like a 357. or 44. magnum

I have never been shot by anyone, but what @TheGoodGuy said is true, the stronger the bullet, the gorier the aftermath will be. If you are using a handgun to CTB, I would recommend using at least a 9mm (semi-auto pistol) or .357 magnum (revolver)

I don't know yet. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
I never had any experience with guns before. Never even held a gun in my life. But I heard this is one of the more reliable methods, so I'm looking into it.

Do you have any recommendations on the best place to shoot? I'm thinking about putting it in my mouth, but I am in the process of doing more research. If I go forward with this, I feel like I only really have one shot. I don't want to risk ending up permanently disfigured.

If you are interested I can PM you some photos and even some videos of handgun suicide, I think they are very helpfull to see how efficient and peacefull the method really is. I also found a few pictures of a guy who killed himself at a bench it has perfect lightning and he looks so peacefull and the pictures kinda calms me down. I will be using a 9mm myself with jacket hollow points.

Check out the firearms megathread. It has various good information about the different effective --and ineffective!-- points of aim.

As for goryness, as has been stated, that depends on how large caliber the gun is. The larger the caliber, the more gore --correlationally, the larger the caliber, the more forgiving it is of bad aim. A big gun gives you a better chance of success if you're uncertain of your aim, but at the expense of more mess. If you're confident of your aim, you can use a smaller caliber and make less mess.

A friend of mine CTB with a 9mm Makarov, which is smaller caliber than the typical 9mm Parabellum (what is commonly refered to when people say, "use a 9mm"). There was very little gore, relatively speaking, and as they were removing his body from his truck, the bullet actually fell out of the wound and landed on the truck seat. But he was a very experienced shooter (gun collector, in fact) and his aim was excellent.

Myself, I am torn between using my .32, which is a small caliber, and my .45, which is quite a large caliber. I know my aim is good enough for the smaller gun, and I'd rather less visual trauma for those who find my body and for my family who may want to see my corpse, but... I'm still worried about becoming a vegetable, and the much gory-er .45 would definitely remove that possibility.

considering I've never shot a gun before, I'm guessing a large caliber would probably be a better option for me

I'd agree. The larger the caliber, typically the higher the price, but it's good peace of mind --so to speak!

Just remember, the relative simplicity/instantenous success of a gun is no assurance against survival instinct. A friend from this forum discovered this after she had bought her gun and found it impossible to pull the trigger. Guns are relatively expensive, and just because it's a good, fast, straightforward method doesn't necessarily make it any easier to go through with it.

I imagine it's scary. I am worried about not finding the courage to pull the trigger (especially with such a high caliber gun). But I feel like I have no choice. I need to get this right.

I generally find myself dry-firing (pulling the trigger with no ammo in the gun) at my aim point several times each evening. It gets me used to the feel of having the gun pointing at my head and inures me to the idea of there being any effect. Hopefully when my day comes I can just go through the same routine --only this time there will be a loud noise and then some peace.

But I doubt it will be that simple. My SI caused me to fail six attempts with exit bag/N2, which is about as peaceful a method as anyone could want, even after several dry runs. Practice does not necessarily make perfect.

Maybe this time I will succeed.

I hope you find peace, through whatever means you choose --either in continuing to live or by catching that elusive bus.
