Hi
I am curious about the dimming star in the constellation Orion.
The hypothesis is that it might go supernova. How many light years away is it?
where will it be visible?
All are welcome to weigh in.

Do you mean betelgeuse? I think it's over 600 light years away. I doubt its anything we'd see in our life time due to distance. But our galaxy is supposedly gonna collide with another at some point.

I think that Betelgeuse went supernova a few hundred years ago, and the dimming is from that prior event? I forgot to add that to my questions. Thank you for the information:)

My astronomer friend told me it's gonna happen before the end of the year.

I love to watch the skies. I live in the country and sometimes I'll even go up onto the top of nearby mountains to view it. It's very beautiful and awe inspiring. Documentaries on the subject are very fascinating as well.

Betelgeuse might have already gone supernova, the light just has to reach us which takes a while :)

I read a while ago about another star's rare red nova becoming visible in the near future (2022/2023) but after looking it up again it seems to have been debunked unfortunately.

Have you guys ever watched through a telescope?

I love watching the night sky. As a child I got into some mighty fine alternative states that way, just from awe.

I have to use binoculars—better than nothing!

Next month it will be cold enough for good aurora borealis viewing! The best is when there is lots of solar flare activity.

The sheer vastness of the universe is simply marvelous and brings the insignificance of my problems into perspective lol
