I've been taking fluoxetine for 5 days now. I was suicidal before and was told by my doctor that the meds could make those feelings worse (this is apparently more common in young people, I am 19). This is my observation: I feel more impulsively suicidal. Before, thoughts of suicide came alongside the need to plan, I had a million thoughts and considerations rushing through my mind. But now, I feel like all I need is something small to tip me over the edge and I'd attempt without hesitation. It's quite scary if I'm honest. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Some people experience that, others don't. Make sure to tell your doctor if it's getting too much or intense suicidal feelings. Anti depressants can take one month to some people to get better. In my case none did, hope it works for you from the bottom of my heart.

Didn't experience that myself but I heard that's a normal effect
Tell your doctor if you feel you can't handle the impulse anymore
Good luck on your new meds I hope it works for you because it didn't for me

Unfortunately, this is normal for antidepressants, their effect is cumulative, but not instantaneous.
My psychiatrist prescribed me Paroxetine and warned me that in the first week I would feel much worse.
My intern psychiatrist fellow also says that almost all antidepressants in the first two weeks only cause worsening of symptoms but not their relief.
I guess you should hold out a little longer.

happened to me the first time I started fluoxetine, and I'm starting it again so there with you. it definitely gets a whole lot worse before it gets better in my experience. I was on it for about 6 years the first time so feel free to ask if you have any questions

Well at least the doctor told you it could make suicidal thoughts worse, mine just gave me Mirtazapine and that's after I said risperidone side effects destroyed my life, I really get the impression they peddle theese drugs and don't pay any attention to the important patient information regarding side effects I don't know if they are to busy or lazy.

Edit: Just saw this case today a women with depression, I wonder if the doctor gave her A/D without any warnings and she took her own life.

Cheers

Mine did the same with sertraline, and within a few days I went from about a 4 or 5 on the suicidal scale to a 10. Then they wouldn't let me stop taking it, even after a friend had to confiscate anything sharp or dangerous from my flat. Obviously I ended up figuring out it was a side effect of the meds and stopped taking it by myself, and my doctor got angry about it.

the thing is, this is why many people won't give meds a chance. often once you get past that rock bottom stage things get better. it's difficult to get through that, don't get me wrong, but it's not a permanent side effect.

Yep, was put on SSRIs for chronic headaches and my thoughts flew through the roof. They say it's more likely if you're under 25, I'm 24. After reading more about SSRIs, I'm never touching those poisons again, although an SSRI caused suicide is tempting

Yeah I do feel like they hand them out quite easily. I had a quick phone call with my doctor and he prescribed them immediately.

I found this an interesting read, it also explains what antidepressants do to the brain.

Wow 6 years is a long time! When did you notice positive effects?

my memory isn't so great but I believe it took a couple of months to feel relatively normal, it's not a quick fix by any means but it really did help! stopped working after a while so I switched to sertraline for 2 years which did nothing, and now i'm giving fluoxetine another go.

Some antidepressants have a paradoxical effect. Prozac never made me more depressed, only better until it lost efficacy, but a friend of mine went on Zoloft briefly, and it did make her more depressed.

Fluoxetine destroyed my life. My brain and body are permanently damaged. Do not stay on this poison medication long term

My psychiatrist at the time originally placed me on it instead of desipramine because weight gain was associated with desipramine, but not Prozac. What neither of us knew in November 1996 is that the weight gain rebound from fluoxetine is ferocious, and my body weight has more than doubled since Prozac stopped working for me.

The one thing I can say for Prozac is that for the only time in my life since entering first grade at age seven, I actually got to experience what it was like not to be depressed for several months, but I am now increasingly convinced that the only cure for depression is prevention. The moment something like exposure to poison school and poison peers starts to bring a child down, either remove that kid from the situation instantly, or automatically doom that child forever.

The deal with anti-depressants like fluoxetine is they work to increase the supply of a neurotransmitter called serotonin. The chemical serotonin is responsible for feeling more confident in yourself. So the risk of suicide in the beginning of treatment stems from a person feeling more self-assured and energetic regarding their suicidal thoughts.

And I may be wrong, but such thoughts within the space of five days may be placebo.
