So, could use some feedback on this, please point out weak points, or where the comparison breaks down. I don't know if I'll ever use this argument in person, or with a non-ss member, but maybe it would help someone understand my choice...

I'm going to compare myself to a pair of sneakers.

When you first get sneakers, they are clean, new, smell fresh. -Youth

They don't fit perfectly at first, but after a while, they break in, and are great. Super comfortable, you want to wear them all the time. -The prime of your life.

After a while, they start to look worn. Maybe the soles are starting to wear through. You can do a couple things to extend their life, like laces and insoles, but those are just temporary fixes. -Where I am now, middle aged, and taking a shitload of drugs to keep going like I'm in my prime.

Eventually, the sneakers are beyond repair. Falling apart. You would be embarrassed to wear them anymore. It's time for a replacement. -Decline, old age - where I refuse to go.

With sneakers most of us replace them long before they need laces and insoles. It doesn't make sense to keep wearing them. That's how I feel. I'm past my prime. I can keep it going for a little while longer, but I want to go out with some dignity. I want to be thought of as that awesome pair of sneakers you ran your fastest 5k in. Not the pair you throw on to mow the lawn.

Idk, maybe this is stupid, but it's been on my mind for a while now. Just glad I have this place to share.

Appreciate any feedback.

This makes a lot of sense to me. It is a good analogy. It is perfectly understandable wanting to exit this earth before old age. It is what I fear.

Thats a good analogy you gave. I think it applies to your case for wanting to quit at your prime. I am not sure many people think of it the same way though as many welcome old age as their best time in their lives where they have good reasons to want to go on beyond wear and tear. I share your thinking and I would go even further to say that if a shoe got ripped on its own then you automatically throw the pair because you cant keep one and throw the other

I get what you're saying, and I have always felt the same way - if I ever got severely injured or crippled, I would kill myself. I thought this way ever since I got my first motorcycle at age 18. I had a bad crash once, wound up in the hospital for a couple days, but no long term effects. When I woke up on the side of the road, first thing I did was make sure I could move my arms and legs. If I couldn't, would have ctb as soon as I was out of the hospital.
