I've suffered enough.

When I encounter someone in the distance walking toward me with their dog and I'm not on the side the dog is, I always try to casually cross over before they get to me, so that I am on the side of the dog, and so can say "Hi!" and pet it if it's friendly.
Just now I was walking toward a man with a Black Lab, but the dog was right next to the fence, so there wouldn't have been enough room had I crossed over. Bummer, as I love Labs!
No problem, though - the moment it spied me, it lagged behind its owner, crossed over to my side, and gave me a big smile and a waggly tail, and when it got to me we had a nice "meet n greet" schmooze and neck scratch butt rub fest!
