.45 Colt or Shotgun

I'm considering a .45 Colt or shotgun. Shotguns freak me out more than a handgun. Which one would be better to ctb?

12 gauge shotgun is less chance of failing

The larger the caliber, the better, but that doesn't guarantee instantaneous death, because I've heard of cases of people who used shotguns and only disfigured their faces.and they continued to live

Well I guess I'll have to go with shotgun because the colt .45 already sold.
