Supposedly if you pad your neck with a towel or similar it is more comfortable. Remember that you don't have to put all of your weight on the rope at once. As little as 10-15 pound of pressure on your neck can be enough for you to pass out.

Yes, it can be very strong in some people. I see a lot of people recommending partial suspension here. Quite possibly better to stand on a stool and let your weight down or kick it away so there is no turning back.
